PRODUCER
18 Small Scale Farmers

WHERE I'M FROM
Harvested in March, this juicy coffee comes from 18 small-scale producers from the region of San Rafael, located 26km north of Jinotega. As shade is essential for the quality of this coffee, the coffee trees grow under a canopy of Guaba, Bucaro and Musaseas trees. This helps slow the maturation of the cherry, and the parchment is dried in 100% shade on raised beds at Beneficio La Estrella. Drying the parchment under shade prevents it from cracking under the harsh sun.

LaRue Family

WHERE I'M FROM
The La Rue family have been farming on this northern patch of Nicaragua since the 1980’s. The family lost possession of the farm during the Sandista Regime, however the farm was returned back to them in the early 2000’s, but in a deplorable condition. To help the survival of the farm, it was divided amongst the siblings of the family. The family continues to live at the farm, which has grown into a socially and ecological family business.

PRODUCER
Victor Barrera

WHERE I'M FROM
We have been lucky to secure only 25kg of this beautiful coffee, a varietal which was originally developed by Cenicafe combining Timor Hybrid, Typica and Bourbon. Farmer, Victor Barrera chose to plant this rare varietal on his farm for many reasons. Tabi’s resistance to disease, the plants architecture itself and the result in the cup are to name but a few.

Despite the relative comfort of harvesting Tabi over more traditional Colombian varieties, Victor pays his pickers considerably more to ensure that only the ripest possible fruit makes it into his wooden hopper before getting processed.

We want to express our appreciation to Victor for this special coffee and the effort and experience that has gone into producing it. So $5.00 per bag will go back to Victor at the end of this year's harvest.

*If you would like your coffee ground, please state this and what for in the notes section at the check-out *

ABOUT THE LABEL
Here at HQ we have been working with the very talented Marty Baptist to create a series of limited edition coffee labels. The first of the series hit shelves this week and can be found adorning our second Kenyan coffee for 2017. From Queensland, Australia, Marty Baptist’s work has been featured nationally and internationally, and his paintings are a mix of astute observations and out loud thoughts. His imagery ranges from oblique pop culture references to loose figurative observations. Check out Marty's Instagram for more of his work.

WHERE I'M FROM

This coffee marks the first of our offerings from Brazil for 2017. Sourced in October of last year, Progresso stretches over 20,000 hectares in total, but only 700 of that is used for growing coffee. Producer Fabiano Borré picks 70% of his cherries production by hand, a laborious task but not without its rewards. The Borré family are deeply dedicated to the preservation of the land and maintain a strong environmental approach to growing and processing.

PRODUCER
Pedro Vicente Zuniga

WHERE I'M FROM

Situated at 1880 masl, the views at Finca Las Cabuyas are quite literally breath taking. Producer Pedro Zuniga washes his cherry and uses a traditional fermentation process to clean off mucilage. This takes around 16 hours, depending on the weather. He then dries the cherry on raised beds over a 10 day period, being careful to ensure coffee is dried slowly and evenly.

PRODUCER

Small farm holders of surrounding Kebeles

WHERE I'M FROM

Established in ‘09 with a wet mill at 1850msl and the surrounding kebeles farmed at elevations between 1900-2100 msl, the wet mill uses a Penhalense Eco pulping machine equipped with a green cherry separator, pulper and mucilage remover which enables more control over quality when processing. Another feature is its ability to process using very little water, once it passes and becomes waste the byproduct runs down to the wetlands where the indigenous flora locally known as “magic flax” absorbs and processes the waste so runoff to local streams does not pose potential risk of pollution.
