PRODUCER
Victor Barrera

WHERE I'M FROM
We have been lucky to secure only 25kg of this beautiful coffee, a varietal which was originally developed by Cenicafe combining Timor Hybrid, Typica and Bourbon. Farmer, Victor Barrera chose to plant this rare varietal on his farm for many reasons. Tabi’s resistance to disease, the plants architecture itself and the result in the cup are to name but a few.

Despite the relative comfort of harvesting Tabi over more traditional Colombian varieties, Victor pays his pickers considerably more to ensure that only the ripest possible fruit makes it into his wooden hopper before getting processed.

We want to express our appreciation to Victor for this special coffee and the effort and experience that has gone into producing it. So $5.00 per bag will go back to Victor at the end of this year's harvest.

*If you would like your coffee ground, please state this and what for in the notes section at the check-out *

Currently it is affiliated to Kibirigwi Farmers’ Co-operative which has a membership of 1115 active farmers.

ABOUT THE LABEL
Here at HQ we have been working with the very talented Marty Baptist to create a series of limited edition coffee labels. The first of the series hit shelves this week and can be found adorning our second Kenyan coffee for 2017. From Queensland, Australia, Marty Baptist’s work has been featured nationally and internationally, and his paintings are a mix of astute observations and out loud thoughts. His imagery ranges from oblique pop culture references to loose figurative observations. Check out Marty's Instagram for more of his work.

PRODUCER
Pedro Vicente Zuniga

WHERE I'M FROM

Situated at 1880 masl, the views at Finca Las Cabuyas are quite literally breath taking. Producer Pedro Zuniga washes his cherry and uses a traditional fermentation process to clean off mucilage. This takes around 16 hours, depending on the weather. He then dries the cherry on raised beds over a 10 day period, being careful to ensure coffee is dried slowly and evenly.

The farming members of Kinyovu Washing Station are no strangers to specialty coffee. Beginning operation in 2002, this group have routinely placed in many annual coffee competitions. In particular, in 2013, coffee from this washing station placed 1st in Cup of Excellence. The cherries received at this wet mill are grown in the Kibira National Forest. In 2012 we bought coffee from the Kinyovu Washing Station, and we are proud that we have the opportunity to buy from these producers again in 2017.

Small farm holders of surrounding Kebeles

WHERE I'M FROM

Established in ‘09 with a wet mill at 1850msl and the surrounding kebeles farmed at elevations between 1900-2100 msl, the wet mill uses a Penhalense Eco pulping machine equipped with a green cherry separator, pulper and mucilage remover which enables more control over quality when processing. Another feature is its ability to process using very little water, once it passes and becomes waste the byproduct runs down to the wetlands where the indigenous flora locally known as “magic flax” absorbs and processes the waste so runoff to local streams does not pose potential risk of pollution.

WHERE I'M FROM
Kagumoini Washing Station sits on the bank of Thuru Thuru river, surrounded by tea fields. As the country is experiencing its worst drought in half a decade, Thuru Thuru river serves as the life source of this washing station and the farmers who contribute cherry to it, unfortunately many other co-ops haven’t been so lucky. Water is scarce as the rivers are drying up, making processing of cherry impossible. We sourced Kagumoini coffee early in the buying season so this is some of the freshest crop you’ll get in your cup!
