1600 Smallholder Producers

The Mugaya Washing Station was established in 1975 and has up to 1600 small coffee producers contributing cherry to it during the harvest. Kenyan coffee farmers in the Kirinyaga County own around 180 coffee trees each, often mixing the SL28 and SL34 varieties. Some also experiment with the somewhat controversial Ruiru 11 varietal, which was developed in the 1970’s.
