Santuário Sul is a project started by Luiz Paulo Dias Pereira in 2015. The motivation is to challenge the global market perception of Brazil coffees through experimental processing techniques and greater cultivar selection. In addition to the traditional Brazilian varieties like yellow bourbon, the farm boasts more than 30 exotic varieties of coffee, different cultivation practices such as shade plantation and innovative processes creating wild new flavours.
This particular lot is entirely composed of SL28 - a variety typically grown in Africa with a strong genetic resistance to drought. SL28 was originally selected by Scott Agricultural Laboratories back in the mid to late 1930s from a large selection of coffee shrubs taken from surrounding areas of Tanzania. Its inherent drought resistance, high yield and prized quality make one of the most well known and regarded varieties in the world. Interestingly SL28 has been traced back to the Bourbon genetic group - a variety found a lot in Brazil.
