Lunches for Los Pequeños

THIS SUMMER, $1 FROM EACH 250G BAG OF COFFEE FROM FINCA LOS AGUACATONES WILL GO TOWARDS FUNDING SCHOOL LUNCHES IN GUATEMALA - AND SEVEN SEEDS WILL MATCH THE TOTAL.

The sense of social responsibility and building a tight, supportive community runs strong in the Morales family, coffee producers in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Initiatives include sharing seeds and young speciality coffee plants with other small-to-medium producers in the region and assisting with lines of credit to keep these farms thriving.

In 2020 the Morales family established a preschool programme for the children of farm workers and other members of the local community. The goal was to provide a safe and healthy learning environment, giving parents an option for child care and education where there wasn’t before. Providing child care while parents work is critical to keeping the community together. Without this support, many workers are forced to immigrate north to the US to look for other opportunities.

The preschool initiative is wholly funded by the Morales family, with assistance from supply partners within the coffee industry. In its first year, the programme provided 35 days of school; this year, it grew to 75 days, roughly the length of the coffee harvest season. Each day lunch and a snack are provided at the cost of approximately $290 USD per child for the 3-month harvest season. The ultimate goal is to earn funding for school and lunches year-round. Seven Seeds has committed to contribute towards this through Lunches for Los Pequeños (little ones).

Seven Seeds have long-term, close relationships with the producers in the Huehuetenango region. 2022 marks our ninth year of direct trade with Familia Morales and Familia Villatoro. This season, $1 from each 250g bag of coffee from the Morales farm, Finca Los Aguacatones, will go towards funding the school lunch programme.

Beyond the funds received through direct coffee sales, Seven Seeds will also match the total donation.

AS OF MARCH 1, WE HAVE RAISED OVER $2700 FOR THS INITIATIVE! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
