Earlier this year, we were lucky enough to be invited to be a part of the judging panel of Best of Panama. Since 1996, the Best of Panama event provides the opportunity for local estates to promote the quality of their harvests, as this competition is overseen and judged by national and international experts in the specialty coffee industry. For coffee growers, Best of Panama is a very important event as it continuously raises the bar for quality.
We secured three Geisha coffees this year; Panama Suarez, Panama Candanedo and Panama Mama Cata. We purchased only a small amount of Suarez and Candaedon, which have flown out the door.
We are expecting the arrival of Mama Cata any day now. This coffee placed 16th on the 2017 Best of Panama coffee auction, and cupped an average of 90 points by the International Jury. Finca Mama Cata, owned by Teodoro Garrido, was founded in 1997. Teodoro embraces technology by using GPS coordinates to divide the lots on Mama Cata and determine which coffee trees are ready to be picked. Data collected also provides the family with information about the overall health and production of the coffee trees and soil composition. The combination of passion and innovation has helped create this exceptional coffee.
