We are excited to launch into Brazil season with the introduction of a new producer who is doing something quite distinctive for this origin. Fazenda Engenho, from producer José Ronaldo Junqueira Dias, is a fully washed lot, an uncommon approach in Brazil where the dry winter climate and flat terrain typically favour high volume natural or pulped natural processing.
Fazenda do Engenho, meaning “Mill,” has a long family history in coffee. Purchased in 1954 by Ciro Carneiro, the farm quickly became known for strong productivity and sound crop management. Ownership later passed to his son, Francisco “Chico do Engenho,” and was eventually divided among the family. José Ronaldo has managed the farm since 1984, balancing his career as a heart surgeon with a deep commitment to the land. A major push for quality began in 2002 with new processing infrastructure and was strengthened in 2017 through further upgrades guided by a technical consultant. Today, José Ronaldo remains closely involved and confident the farm is approaching its next leap in quality.
For Seven Seeds, a first‑year purchase is always exciting. It brings the chance to discover new flavours and begin a long‑term relationship with a producer of exceptional quality. While enduring partnerships are central to who we are, the growth of our business allows us to introduce new suppliers to our community in Melbourne and beyond. This Brazilian producer is helping shift outdated views of Brazilian coffee by offering a clean, complex, and dynamic washed profile to Australian drinkers.
