Ichuga, Kenya

$28.00

Ichuga encapsulates everything we love about coffee from Nyeri. Fruit driven, vibrant and intense like nothing else you will find throughout the year.

Sourcing

PRODUCER: Various small holder FCS members

RELATIONSHIP: Second year of purchasing

ORIGIN PARTNER: Cafe Imports

Nyeri County is one Kenya's most famous growing regions. The name Nyeri is derived from the Masaai word nyiro, meaning red, after the red volcanic soil in the area. Nyeri’s red volcanic soil is rich in organic matter and nutrients, making it an excellent region for growing coffee. Ichuga is one of 5 factories owned and operated by Kiama Farmer Cooperative Society (FCS).

Located near the town of Karatina, The KenyaCof field team provides training to farmers and washing station employees. The station also receives pre-financing to support maintenance and operating costs. Once dry, parchment is delivered to Kahawa Bora Millers, a sister company of KenyaCof. The mill has the capacity to process smaller lots separately to help preserve quality and traceability.

Ichuga encapsulates everything we love about coffee from Nyeri. Fruit driven, vibrant and intense like nothing else you’ll find throughout the year. This particular selection is 'AA', which indicates the largest bean size available, and is often associated with high cup quality. Because of it’s size, the application of heat required is slightly different when roasting, keeping the roasting team on their toes. We're roasting this exceptional lot for filter this year, to highlight vibrant acidity and unique character traits associated with the region.

Transparency

2018 marked a statement of intent for us, to ensure that people growing exceptional coffee are still doing so in decades to come.

We started publishing the price we pay to producers exposing the traceability they deserve and discerning drinkers' demand as the new norm. We refer to the most direct payment as ‘Farmgate’.

We’re proud we can publish this for our single origins and house blends.

Seven Seeds has been involved with the Speciality Coffee Transaction Guide as data donors for the past five years. We have signed 'The Pledge', a commitment to transparency in coffee trading.

Roasting and Shipping

We roast our coffee from Monday to Friday, but not every type each day. We aim to ship orders within 1-2 business days.

Roasted coffee reaches it's peak 5-14 days after roasting and stays fresh for up to 30 days. We may send coffee roasted a few days earlier.

The Roastery and Head Office are closed on weekends and public holidays; we do not roast or ship these days.

Thanks for understanding and happy brewing!
