With the Melbourne International Coffee Expo running last MONTH, we felt the buzz as coffee lovers, experts and tire-kickers flocked to the city of Melbourne. For Seven Seeds, MICE meant a busy week at our retail stores, attending events and taking over the LaMarzocco brew-stand on Friday.
In celebration of the worldwide recognised coffee week, and perhaps to cleanse everyone’s palates after the thermoshock™ coffees arrived #makecoffeewashedagain - we re-released the famed 100g packs of Seven Seeds x Takesi Java retail packs that were frozen in July during our Takesi launch month. The exclusive packs were available to purchase at Seven Seeds, Carlton as well as at MICE. As one of only two buyers of the Takesi Java in the world it was wonderful to see such an enthusiastic response to this exceptional coffee.
On Friday during the World Barista Championship finals, the Seven Seeds held a brew-bar takeover in collaboration with La Marzocco & Modbar at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo.
Our experienced baristas were excited to be serving a menu of select coffees curated by our sourcing and roasting team which included: Seven Seeds House Espresso Blend, alongside Ethiopian single origins Mustefa Abalulessa on espresso and Kefyalew Deressa Tulu, our current washed filter.
It was great to walk the floor and catch up with so many old friends, the show has been likened to a snapshot of what’s happening in the industry. Alt-milks, fermentation weirdness and equipment automation were all features at the expo. In future we’d love to see the return of more coffee producer representation, Cup of Excellence and an education component including cupping, roasting and green grading.
Claire Wallace, who trained at Seven Seeds HQ in preparation for the World Barista Championships advanced to the final round on Friday morning and we were thrilled to cheer her on. Claire’s brilliant 15 minute presentation concentrated on fermentation and we thoroughly enjoyed watching her compete on the world stage, thanks for the Seven Seeds shout out. We are so proud of Claire for placing third in the world, congratulations! And of course to our local legend Anthony Douglas, congrats for winning the championship trophy with Axil Coffee roasters. What an achievement.
After three years without MICE due to Covid, although still floating around Jeff’s Shed from what we’ve heard, we ask ourselves where are we in this coffee world, dare I say ‘Specialty Fermented’ coffee world, preferably with oat milk please! *Shout out to our alt-partner Happy Happy for featuring our Golden Gate Espresso Blend all week.
